Casting and Audition Tip: “TimeZones” – When creating your casting call / audition posting about roles in your upcoming video game, audio drama, short film, etc, it can be easy to forget that working in the digital age, most likely you will be receiving applicants outside your part of the globe.
Always remember to put your timezone, or the timezone of your casting director, in the audition details.Remember, “Due by Midnight”, “…EOD Tuesday”, and “Noon” can be super vague, so always toss a timezone on there. Timezone information can also be important if you intend to do live-directed sessions with your talent, so noting that is important as well (being that the direction will most likely be during ‘daytime’ for the client/company.)
And, on the flip side, if you are an actor applying for a role, but that detail is missing on the documentation, and you are unsure if the deadline is in 6 hours or a couple minutes… better to ask for clarity than turn in your audition late! And as for live direction, knowing if you are on the complete opposite side of the world as the client, and you are not a late/night or early/morning person, good to know those details before signing on.
Now, you might say “ohhhh that never happens, people know better these days.” I see, at minimum, at least ten auditions cross my desk each week this minor detail, so it is still not as automatic as we may think. Not yet anyways. We’ll get there, but till then, Posters, please post that timezone, and auditionees, if you’re ever unsure, ask the poster!
Save lots of future pain and confusion, provide details now:)
